Dramatic Upgrade to HD Video Production Control Room Engages Football & Baseball Fans
To meet evolving fan expectations, the Oakland Athletics needed to make some upgrades to their stadium. As the first upgrade in nearly 20 years, the A’s made the leap from an antiquated, standard-definition control room and dot matrix score boards and displays to a new HD video production control room, two LED video scoreboards and new ribbon board displays.
The A’s co-tenant, the Oakland Raiders, also uses the boards during football season, making O.Co Coliseum the only dual-purpose facility across MLB and the NFL. The A’s chose Diversified to lead the integration based on prior experience and knowledge of NFL requirements, which provided the ability to accommodate both teams in the production environment.
With a short design timeframe and limited access while the stadium was not in use, managing the integration during on-site construction presented a challenge to meeting the tight deadlines. In addition, the upgraded video production control room space required considerable architectural coordination. Upon award, Diversified delivered information to the architect and design team in a rapid fashion, allowing the rack room to be built first and jump starting the on-site installation. Diversified expertly managed the project working efficiently with all trades.
With Grass Valley as the Athletic’s preferred vendor, working almost entirely with their products proved to be very cost effective. The integration included a video production switcher, routers, cameras (including slow-motion), instant replay, and terminal gear. Additional equipment included Daktronics LED video scoreboards and ribbon board displays.
The Oakland A’s now operate in HD and enjoy a dramatic upgrade to their video scoreboards (with 5x increased viewing area), have the ability to create singular images between the two video boards and more content flexibility for highlighting statistics and integrating full graphics. The enhanced view from every seat continues to boost the overall fan experience for both teams.
